The fall Open House event is inspired by World Music Festival Chicago and highlights South Asian culture with free music and dance activations throughout the building. Guests can enjoy food by Bombay Eats as they encounter engaging performances, films, artists and meetups across three floors of the Chicago Cultural Center. By the mid-1990s the house music from Chicago and other American cities had morphed into electronic dance music styles like acid house, trance and drum and bass. These styles came back to the American mainstream as the millennium approached, now packaged as "electronica." Soon, artists like Madonna, Rickey Martin and Jennifer Lopez were singing over tracks you could dance to at a club. By the early 2010s the electronic dance music genre had grown from its roots in these tight-knit, marginalized communities in Chicago to become a massive industry, generating billions of dollars. On the previous day, Friday June 23 from 5-9pm the Chicago Cultural Center will host the conference portion of the festival, featuring Robert Owens as Keynote Speaker. Panel discussions include one hour talks on the queer roots and safe spaces in Chicago’s house music scene, promotional strategies, activism and more.
Grammy-nominated producer and DJ Emmaculate has been in the DJing scene for decades. In 2017, he released a song as a solo artist, “Do It,” featuring vocalist Kaye Fox. The song was released on Terry Hunter’s T’s Box Records and since then, Emmaculate hasn’t looked back.
As a collective of visionaries, their work together inhabits the liminal space of a dream. Throughout the residency, researchers, artists, community workers, healers, and community members are invited into the Yates Gallery to have conversations about Black sacred space, Black homemaking, and Black grounding, and to participate in the unfolding of the project. The work is inspired by and indebted to the work of The Nap Ministry (Tricia Hersey), bell hooks, and Audre Lorde. From 2004 to 2022, Fleming led a research group studying neutrinos as a professor at Yale University while also performing research at Fermilab. She was the founding spokesperson for the two neutrino experiments, ArgoNeuT and MicroBooNE, focusing on studying neutrinos and developing the next generation of accelerator neutrino detectors using liquid argon, and was an early member of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). She is known for pioneering a class of detectors called Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers, which provided a giant leap forward in how scientists may study the varying states of neutrinos and how the subatomic particles might interact with matter. CHICAGO — The City of Chicago and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) welcome new and returning free music performances, visual art exhibitions, film programming, and more this summer throughout the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E Washington St). Opening its doors after business hours, the new three-part Open House Series (June 15, Sept 29, Dec 9) invites guests to experience exciting art activations by DCASE’s artists in residence, DJs, shopping, socializing and more throughout the historic building. This musical artform is something people of all ages, genders and sexual orientations have enjoyed for decades. Starting in the late 1970s, house music gets its name from the Chicago club, The Warehouse, which started out as a members-only club for gay men. When the club opened in the late ‘70s, a DJ named Frankie Knuckles was invited to play regularly.
